How to Choose a Word for the Year With God
If you’ve been wondering how to choose a word for the year with God, this approach offers a gentle, faith-centered place to begin. There’s something sacred about New Year’s Day. The calendar turns, the noise quiets just a little, and we’re given a fresh beginning, not because everything is suddenly perfect, but because God, in his grace, allows us to start again.
Today marks the first day of 2026, and instead of rushing into resolutions or long list of goals, I’m choosing a slower more intentional approach. One rooted in reflection, prayer, and alignment with God. That’s why as this year begins, I’ve chosen a word for the year.
This year, my word is intentional.
Why Choose a Word for the Year?
A word for the year isn’t about pressure or performance. It’s not about doing more or becoming someone new overnight. It’s about focus. As we step into a brand new year, one word can act as an anchor , something that brings us back when life feels full, rushed, or over whelming. Instead of asking what should I accomplish? a word invites a better question:
“How do I want to walk with God this year?”
“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” — Proverbs 16:3 (NIV)
Choosing a word for the year is a way of committing our days, decisions, and direction to God—trusting Him to lead instead of rushing ahead on our own.
Why I Chose “Intentional”
On this first day of the year, I’m reminded that how I begin matters, not because the day itself holds power, but because God meets us in our beginnings.
I want each day of 2026 to count, not in a striving way, but in a surrendered one.
Being intentional means:
- Seeking God before rushing into plans
- Creating space to hear his voice
- Choosing alignment over urgency
- Being present long enough to be shaped by him
I’ve learned that growth doesn’t come from doing everything. It comes from doing what matters on purpose.
Intentional With God, Not Just My Schedule
Intentional living isn’t about filling every moment. It’s about making room for God in the moments that already exist.
- Reading his Word.
- Sitting quietly with him.
- Listening instead of rushing ahead.
As this new year begins, I’m choosing to be more present with God, trusting that when I seek him first, everything else finds it’s place.
A New Year, A Fresh Start
New Year’s Day carries hope. Not because life resets overnight, but because God is faithful to walk with us into what’s new. Whether this year feels exciting, uncertain, or somewhere in between, this is an invitation not to have everything figured out, but to walk intentionally, hand in hand with him.
Your Turn: What’s Your Word For The Year?
Your word doesn’t have to look like mine. It just needs to be led by God. Take a moment to reflect, pray, listen, and then write down the word God places on your heart for this season.
Maybe your word is:
- Trust
- Rest
- Obedience
- Faith
- Surrender
Ask Him. Sit with him. Let him lead. One word guided by God can shape your entire year.
