A Family Tradition That Lives On
Christmas is more than just a season; in fact, it’s a collection of moments, memories, and traditions that we carry with us through the years. For me, the holidays have always been a time of connection, joy, and cherished family traditions that made each year feel magical.
Growing up, one of the most treasured memories was spending Christmas Eve at my grandmother Madear’s house. She was the heart of our family, and her warm giving spirit was the glue that brought us all together.
Her calls would start early on Christmas Eve, making sure everyone was on their way. “Are ya’ll on your way?” she’d ask, her excitement practically bubbling through the phone. By the time we arrived, her home was alive with laughter, the smell of her German chocolate cake, and appetizers wafting through the air. Moreover, a beautifully lit Christmas tree surrounded by stacks of gifts.
We’d gather in the living room exchanging presents as smiles and laughter filled the space. It wasn’t about the gifts-it was about the love, the togetherness, and the memories we made in those moments. My grandmother’s house on Christmas Eve wasn’t just a gathering place; it was the heart of our family’s holiday season.
Although my grandmother is no longer with us, those traditions continue to live on in my heart. They’ve inspired me to reflect on the beauty of holiday traditions and find new ways to bring that same sense of joy and connection into my own family celebrations.
The Beauty of Traditions
Traditions have a way of anchoring us and reminding us of what truly matters. They are the thread that ties generations together, connecting us through shared experiences and values.
The Gift of Togetherness
My grandmother was such a giving person always thinking of others. For example, whether it was making sure every family member had a gift to open, she found joy in creating a space where everyone felt love and included.
This tradition taught me that holidays aren’t about perfection-they’re about love, gratitude, and being present with the people who matter most.
Create New Traditions This Year
Just as life changes, so do traditions. While we hold onto the memories of the past, it’s also exciting to create new ones. Here are a few to inspire your own holiday traditions.
- Christmas Eve Appetizer Night
Recreate my family’s tradition by inviting loved one’s to bring their favorite appetizer’s. Spend the evening laughing, and sharing delicious food together.
- Gratitude Jar
Have each family to write down something they’re grateful for and read them aloud on Christmas morning. This simple tradition brings a deeper meaning to the season
- DIY Ornament Exchange
Get crafty with family or friends by creating ornaments and exchanging them as keepsakes. It’s a fun way to bond, all the while adding personal touches to your tree.
- Holiday Movie Marathon
Set up a cozy movie night with hot cocoa, popcorn, and classic Christmas films. Bonus: Create a hot cocoa bar with toppings like marshmallows, whipped creme, and candy canes!
- Book Swap Party
Host a book exchange with family and friends. It’s a great way to share your favorite reads and discover new ones for the cozy winter nights.
- Volunteer Together
Honor the spirit of giving by volunteering at a local shelter, food bank, or charity. Giving back as a family is the one of the most meaningful ways to celebrate the season.
- Host a Christmas Brunch
One year, my family gathered at my cousin’s home for a beautiful holiday brunch and it was truly unforgettable. We had shrimp & grits, breakfast quiche, mimosas and variety of other delicious bites.
