The Mood This Year: “We’re Not Doing Christmas”
If you scroll through Tiktok or social media right now, you’ve probably heard it too.
We’re not doing Christmas this year.
Don’t buy anything.
Make the economy suffer.
And listen. I understand where that’s coming from. Times are tough. People are struggling. Snap benefits have been cut, prices are high, and families are trying to make ends meet. But here’s the truth I’m coming back to. You can’t cancel Christmas.
You can’t cancel the birth of Jesus.
Christmas still stands.
Hope remains.
Light continues to shine.
Because Christmas isn’t about the gifts that you can buy, it’s about what’s already been given.
The True Meaning of Christmas
Christmas is about celebrating the birth of Jesus, and that truth never changes no matter what the world looks like.
The real heart of Christmas has never been the shopping, the gifts, or the spending. Those things are traditions, fun ones yes, but they’re not the foundation. Christmas is about celebrating the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. When the angels appeared to the shepards in Luke 2:10-11, the message wasn’t “Good deals have come!
It was, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. That’s the news worth celebrating even when the world feels heavy. Especially when the world feels heavy.

As we move through the Christmas season, having something simple and faith-centered to return to each day can help keep our hearts focused on what truly matters. One resource I’ve personally found meaningful is a Christ-centered Advent devotional that gently guides you through Scripture and reflection, helping you slow down and remember the reason we celebrate. It’s a beautiful way to keep Jesus at the center of Christmas, especially during a busy season.
You Can Celebrate Without Stress
Maybe you can’t give like you use to. Maybe the Christmas tree will be smaller or the gifts fewer this year. That’s okay. Christmas is about presence, not presents.
You can still.
- Put up that little tree and let it remind you of hope
- Sing a Christmas hym and let it fill your home with peace.
- Read the story of Jesus birth with your family.
- Pray together and thank God for what you do have.
- Call someone who might be lonely and share a little light.
The beauty of Christmas is that it’s not measured in money. It’s measured in the meaning.
Faith Over Finances
Let’s be honest, the economy is uncertain, but God’s promises are not.
When people say we’re not doing Christmas this year , I get it. They’re tired, they’re frustrated, they’re weary. But Christmas was made for weary people. Jesus didn’t come into a perfect world. He came into a broken one. He was born into simplicity, not luxury, and that’s part of the miracle.
So if your heart is heavy this year, remember you can still celebrate the birth of hope itself.
The Light Still Shines
The world can say, “We’re skipping Christmas,” but heaven already declared,
Unto us a child is born , unto us a son is given. Isaiah 9:6
The birth of Jesus was and still is the greatest gift ever given. No amount of inflation, no cut in benefits, no change in circumstances can take that away.
So go ahead and hang your lights if they make you smile. Play your favorite Christmas song. Pray. Rejoice. Worship.
Because Christmas isn’t canceled. The light still shines.
This year let’s bring Christmas back to the heart. Let’s celebrate Jesus, not the spending. Whether you have much or little, your home is full or quiet, a Savior was still born for you.
And that alone is worth celebrating.
