It can be challenging to find a church home where you can truly plant yourself and grow. Growing up in a Baptist church back home in Mississippi, the teachings I received through those years are markedly different from what I encounter today, not just in content, but also in style and approach to worship. The church I attend now I attended for many years before officially becoming a member.
Throughout the years and continuing to this day, the teachings have played a pivotal role in my personal growth. More than ever, the supportive community within the church has contributed significantly to my spiritual development. I must admit that attending this church over the years has required me to unlearn so many things that were hindering me.
Taking it a step further, I have found personally that it’s important to plug into our faith communities not just on Sundays, but through out the week. Keeping this continuous connection helps us to stay aligned to God’s path and navigate life’s challenges with support and guidance. Community has become such an integral part of my life now. Our church offers fantastic life groups for connection, and numerous ministries for serving. Additionally, I’ve found value in connecting with other communities that also prioritize keeping Christ in the center even outside of the church.
We all need community where we can take off the mask and relate authentically. While there is no perfect church, here are a few key points to consider when searching for the right one.
- Doctrinal Alignment- ensure that the church’s beliefs align with your personal beliefs and understanding of the bible.
- Community Atmosphere- Evaluate the sense of community and fellowship within the church. Are members welcoming and supportive?
- Leadership Accountability- Access the leadership structure and transparency of the church’s leadership.
- Worship Style- Consider the style of worship and whether it resonates with your spiritual preference.
- Mission and Outreach- Look into the church’s mission statement and involvement in outreach programs. Does their mission align with your values and priorities?
- Service Opportunities-Access the church’s involvement in serving the community and whether there are opportunities for you to participate.
- Opportunities for growth- Consider the availability of programs for spiritual growth such as bible study, small groups and discipleship training.
- Social Issues- Understand the church’s stance on social issues and whether it aligns with your convictions and values.
- History and Reputation- Research the church’s history and reputation within the community. Are there any red flags or controversies?
- Prayer consideration- Finally pray for guidance and discernment as you seek the right church. Trust God to lead you to a place where you can grow spiritually and serve him effectively.
