Perimenopause-it’s a phase I never expected to feel so personal, yet here I am navigating this transition as I head into my second year.  The changes in my body have been more profound than I ever imagined, and it feels like I’m noticing something new every day. Some changes have been subtle while others have been more obvious, and while not all of them have been easy, I’m learning to embrace them with mindfulness and intention.

One thing that has been transformative for me is Hormone Replacement Therapy.  The HRT patch has helped me regulate my hormones and eliminate the night sweats that used to disrupt my sleep. I use to wake up feeling drenched. I’m now comfortable with my low dose regimen, but I know there’s more I can do to take care of myself as I continue to thrive during this phase of life.

So, as I embrace this new year, here are some of the strategies and wellness products that I am incorporating into my routine to help me feel my best.

Wellness Strategies for Thriving Through Perimenopause

  • Prioritize sleep with cool comfortable bedding

Sleep has been a major priority for me. Perimenopause can disrupt sleep patterns, and I’ve found that one of the best ways to improve sleep quality is by ensuring my environment supports it.  That’s why I’m trying Eden & Om bamboo sheet set.  Their sheets are designed to cool your body temperature and help you sleep more soundly.

  • Prioritizing Skin Care

Perimenopause comes with plenty of skin changes. I’ve noticed that my skin is drier than before and sometimes it’s more sensitive especially when I’m changing my HRT patches. That’s why I’ve been mindful about skin care products I use.  I rely on La-Roche Posay for gentle yet effective skin care, especially their moisturizers that help keep my skin nourished and hydrated during these changes.

  • Incorporate Magnesium for Restful Sleep

One of the things that I’ve added to my nightly routine is magnesium, which has been a game changer.  Magnesium helps support relaxation and improve sleep quality. It works great mixed with tart cherry juice for a night time cocktail. This combination has been fantastic for promoting deeper uninterrupted sleep.

  • Increasing Protein Intake

Another key strategy I’ve added is increasing my protein intake.  As we go through perimenopause, our bodies experience changes that affect muscle mass, metabolism, and bone health.  Protein is essential for maintaining muscle strength, supporting metabolism and keeping energy levels stable.

  • Embrace Movement and Mindfulness

Staying active has always been important to me, but during perimenopause, I’ve become more intentional about moving my body in ways that support my energy levels and mental health.  Whether it’s light stretching or going for a walk, movement has been key to maintaining my mental clarity and overall well-being. Journaling has also been a helpful way to incorporate mindfulness.

  • Support Hormonal Balance Supplements

I’ve been focusing on incorporating high-quality supplements into my daily routine.  One brand I trust is Thorne, known for their commitment to 100% clean ingredients in all of their products.

As I navigate perimenopause, I’ve also encountered some unexpected challenges like bladder leaks, which I know many women experience but may not always feel comfortable talking about. This is a sensitive topic, but I want to share that it’s something that can happen during this phase.  Hormonal changes, especially the drop in estrogen can affect the pelvic floor muscles  and lead to issues with bladder control.  I’m taking proactive steps, like exploring pelvic floor therapy, to strengthen this area and manage the symptoms.

Perimenopause can feel overwhelming at times, but I’ve learned to approach it with patience and self-compassion.  By focusing on strategies that help me thrive, I’m finding a sense of balance and peace.  I hope that sharing my journey with you can inspire you to approach your own perimenopause journey with grace and confidence.
